Hi,welcome to my review of Clickfunnels, this is an extremely popular landing page builder that has somewhat of a cult-like following. When I first reviewed this product, all I cared about was getting the 40% commission they payout for their affiliates. I drank the Brunson kool-aid and actually believed all the hype around this software.
I have since updated this review a few times to reflect not just my evolving views on the actual product but on the whole internet marketing industry as a whole. Which seems to be full of get rich quick merchants and overhyped products.
What exactly is Clickfunnels?
There seems to be a lot of buzz about Clickfunnels and its owner,Russell Brunson, I will be honest with you here,my initial reason for this review was just to promote Clcikfunnels and try and retire in 100 days!!! Sounds ridiculous right?? Yeah, it sounds ridiculous to me now, but when I first saw the Facebook ad by Mr Brunson about the Clickfunnels Bootcamp and its programme to retire people in 100 days,I naively believed him.
More on the Affiliate Bootcamp later, lets concentrate first on this Clickfunnels review and see if the software is worth the money you will pay should you subscribe.
Clickfunnels can be best described as a decent sales funnel builder, with some marketing automation features.
To be an effective marketer in this digital age you need a software that will solve a lot of your problems that can also be automated. Clickfunnels provides a lot of these automation tools.
Here are some of the features of Clickfunnels:
Drag and drop page editor: Lets you build landing pages or complete sales funnels with a simple drag and drop function, even people who hate dealing with technical issues can have a decent landing page up and running in no time.
Targeted e-mail marketing: Send automated messages to your leads based on their behaviour on your website
A/B testing: Create multiple variations of your opt-in forms, landing page and sales funnels and test which one gets the most conversions and tweak ones that receive low conversions.
Multiple funnel templates: This one of the strong points for Clickfunnels, it has multiple examples of funnel templates that you can copy.
Lead scoring: Score your leads in regards to what actions they take and what they have brought from you. This will give a better indication to which customers are better prospects than others and you can take necessary actions based on this score. Very powerful stuff.
Smart segmentation: Only send e-mails to your customers according to the way they opted into your list. If you have multiple lists, you do not want to bombard them with e-mails that will annoy them. Smart segmentation will make sure customers only receive emails that they find relevant.
As you can see, It’s built to solve a lot of your marketing problems, you can create any kind of sales funnel with this software and with its intuitive drag and drop editor and the many templates Clickfunnels gives you,its a lot easier than it may seem
If you have something to sell whether it’s a service, digital or physical products, Clickfunnels has a solution to it. I don’t think it will be replacing the big e-commerce platforms but it does offer similar services.
Creating Your First Sales Funnel
There are many types of funnels that can be created within Clickfunnels, if you are a complete newbie and don’t know what a funnel is or what its purpose is, I’ll give you a brief explanation.
A funnel is simply a set of steps you take your customers through so they undertake certain actions. For example, you can create a webinar funnel, where you have a series of steps as shown below.
You see how the customer is taken through each stage so that hopefully they take action during the webinar and purchase whatever the host will be pitching them.
Clickfunnels makes it really easy to design these funnels systems, if you are an experienced funnel designer (or funnel hacker as Clickfunnel members like to call themselves) then you can start from scratch.
However, they have really made this software simple and powerful to use, this why they have funnel templates for every type of funnel.
For example, the three images below show the readymade templates for a simple webinar funnel.
You have a registration page, a thank you and confirmation page and a page to let the registrants know the webinar will be starting soon. More steps can be added to this funnel, but it just shows how simple and powerful Clickfunnels is.
The other types of funnels that can be built with Clickfunnels:
- Optin funnels: Usually consists of just 2 steps, one page to optin into your email list and then a thank you page.
- Sales funnel: Probably one of the most commonly used on clickfunnels, a sales funnel consists of multiple steps, a page to get your customers email address, a page to purchase the product and a thank you page. Further pages can be added to upsell them on further products or if they choose not buy, downsell them on a cheaper product/service or whatever you are selling.
- Membership site: You can have 2 or 3 steps depending on if the membership will be free or paid.
- Automated webinar: 3 step funnel consisting of registration, thank you and a reminder of the webinar replay.
There are many more funnels you can build within Clickfunnels, those mentioned are the templates you get access to when you sign up with Clickfunnels.
This is another feature of Clickfunnels that I really like if you create an awesome funnel and want to share it with others for free, Clickfunnels lets you do this.
All you do is click on the funnel you want to share, go to settings and click on the tab that says share funnel (as pictured below), you will be provided with a link that you can share with anyone that wants to use the funnel.
If they are not a member of Clickfunnels, they will be required to create one (there is a 14-day free trial) and then that funnel will be loaded into their account.
The Drag and Drop Editor
If there is one thing that is universally praised about Clickfunnels, that is its page editor. A page in Clickfunnels is categorised in different parts.
The sections, rows and elements are all colour coded so you know what each one is and what it does. To give you an idea of these categories below is a series images of one of my optin pages for Clickfunnels affiliate BootCamp (more on that later).
You see each image has a coloured border around it, the coloured border identifies what part of the page it represents.
The green border represents the section, all the page details are within the section. The blue border represents rows and columns, inside these you insert elements. Elements have an orange border, these are the content of your pages like headlines, text, images and videos.
This is the tool that makes Clickfunnels into a supercharged marketing software, its primary focus is to replace your autoresponder. However, it is so much more than just an email marketing software.
Within this marketing tool you get all the data you would expect from any email marketing software, data like who subscribed, who unsubscribed, what your open rate percentage is and so on.
Where this tool really comes to life is the data it provides about your subscriber’s actions or non-actions within any of your funnels. For instance, each of your subscribers will be given an action score, it’s based on a complex algorithm but it provides you with four relevant metrics, they are:
- Recency: How recent this lead interacted with you through email, visiting your funnel or any other means.
- Frequency: How frequently this lead has purchased anything from you
- Value: The monetary value of this lead
- Social: If their given email address is associated with any social media accounts.
The image below shows what type of information you can extract from Actionectics, armed with this information will allow you to make better marketing decisions.
When you click on the profile tab you will get a whole lot of information about that customer, things like their action score, what they have purchased, if they are part of any of your memberships (if you have any), if they receive any emails from within actionetics and what recent activity they have done within any of your funnels.
Within the email lists tab, you have information about all the lists you have in actionectics, you’ll be able to create lists around your customer’s actions.
For example, you can create lists for people who registered for a webinar but didn’t turn up, or they turned up but didn’t buy and so on. You can set rules within actionetics that will make your marketing much more efficient. Not only will you be able to communicate with your list through email and only send messages that are relevant to them but you have the ability to send them SMS and direct mail as well.
Actionetics is probably the most powerful feature within Clickfunnels and that’s why you only have access to it if you purchase the $297 pm package.
If you have your own product and have a stunning funnel to advertise this product with, you will need traffic, of course, there are many ways to get this traffic. SEO ( takes a while and not guaranteed), social media (build up your audience) or paid traffic (could cost you if you are not careful).
However, there is another method, get other people to drive traffic to your funnel and you pay them a commission every time they make a sale. This is called affiliate marketing and with backpack, Clickfunnels has made it very easy for product owners to set up their own affiliate programme.
In Backpack, affiliates will get access to their own links, stats and even tools like banners and swipe files to promote your products. This feature is only available in the more expensive package.
There are two versions of Clickfunnels both have a 14-day free trial. The basic package is priced at $97 per month. With this package, you’ll get everything you need to create high converting sales funnels, opt-in pages or landing pages for whatever you are selling.
However, this package does not include Actionetics, the advanced marketing tool that makes Clickfunnels really powerful. You can still do a lot with this package but Clickfunnels really shines with its $297 per month package.
One of the reasons I am not promoting this anymore is because there are better and cheaper alternatives. As someone who enjoys working with WordPress, there are WordPress themes that can do the same job as Clickfunnels but without the need to pay a high monthly fee.
Some of these are:
Clickfunnels Affiliate Bootcamp
Clickfunnels is a great software especially for seasoned marketers and it also has a great affiliate programme. It pays out 40% commission on all its products. It’s probably one of the reasons it has grown so fast since it was first put on the market.
To help affiliates further, Russell Brunson has put together a solid affiliate Bootcamp. First released in September 2016, the Clickfunnels affiliate Bootcamp provides training on ways to promote Clickfunnels focusing especially on Facebook ads.
Russell Brunson and the team regularly update it and it even has its own membership site and facebook page.
Not only will you learn about building funnels and the whole Clickfunnels product collection, you will also learn how to run facebook ads. There is no doubt that facebook advertising if done correctly, can be extremely profitable.
Affiliate marketing is probably one of the best ways to start an online business and also one where you don’t need much capital to start with.
Joining is free and you don’t even need a Clickfunnels account to get started (although it helps).
Although it is a great training programme, the advertisement for it is very deceptive, Russell says you can retire in 100 days by following the training. They have a thriving Facebook group and I honestly do not know of anyone who has retired after completing this training.
Its one of the reasons why I do not promote Clickfunnels anymore (You’ll notice the link to the website is not an affiliate link), this is the type of marketing that really annoys me.
If you are interested in learning about Affiliate marketing, then try Wealthy Affiliate, it has one of the most comprehensive training programmes on how to start an online business through Affiliate Marketing.

Who is Clickfunnels For?
Clickfunnels is not for every business, if you have a lot of content on your website and rely on SEO for a lot of your traffic, Clickfunnels is not for you.
These are the business’s that Clickfunnels can help.
People who provide a digital service
In other words, if you rely on a lot of paid advertising and don’t have much content on your site, Clickfunnels can really help your business.
Conclusion and why I stopped promoting it.
If you are looking for a software that can build you high converting sales funnels, then Clickfunnels is for you. Its drag and drop editor is easy to use and you are given decent templates to create your own landing pages or sales funnels.
If you are really out of ideas, you can take look in the Clickfunnels marketplace or hire a Clickfunnels certified partner to design your funnel(it will set you back a bit). They also have a thriving facebook page where funnel users are always sharing ideas and critiquing each other’s sales pages.
There are a few negatives things I have to say, not about the actual product (although I think it is over hyped) its main package is too expensive.
If you don’t have a product or service or are just looking to build some good looking landing pages, there are cheaper alternatives like Leadpages,Wishpond,Unbounce and others.
If you are a content marketer or someone who sells a lot of physical products, you are better off with WordPress or one of the main eCommerce platforms.
The other negative aspect is the Clickfunnel followers, the people who think Clickfunnels is the greatest thing since sliced bread.
Recently there was a new competitor to Clickfunnels that entered the market place, many people who were with Clickfunnels left and purchased this new website builder.
I really don’t know if Builderall (name of the competitor) is better than Clickfunnels, although it has way more features,is way cheaper and looks SEO friendly (despite what its adherents say, Clickfunnels is useless for SEO purposes).
However, when former Clickfunnel members started to promote Builderall all hell seemed to have broken out on Clickfunnels Facebook page.
That’s when I really noticed the cult-like mentality of some of these Clickfunnels devotees. Many were critiquing Builderall without trying it and others thought that it just a flash in the pan and that Builderall will not last.
Maybe it will or may be it won’t, but the truth is Clickfunnels is too expensive for a lot of people and there are cheaper and better alternatives.
It’s the reason I even stopped promoting the Clickfunnels affiliate Bootcamp, Russell Brunson has put way too much hype around this programme (retiring in 100 days???), I don’t know anyone who has retired in 100 days with this course.
It’s just another deceptive marketing tactic that is prevalent in this industry which gives it a bad name.
What do you think? Do you agree with my review of Clickfunnels? would love to hear your thoughts
